How to Start 2024 Intentionally
by Bron Stephens
As the year ends, it’s a great time to reflect on the past twelve months and set intentions for the year ahead. This reflection exercise can be a powerful tool to gain clarity, celebrate accomplishments, learn from challenges, and set meaningful goals for the future. In this article, we’ll explore a step-by-step reflection exercise to help you end one year and start another with purpose and intention. Of course, this is a great exercise to do anytime you are starting something new, on a birthday, to set up for the next year, or just when you’re feeling a bit stuck and want to think about where you’re at and what you want.
Step 1 : Create a Peaceful Space
To begin this reflection exercise, find a quiet and comfortable space where you can be alone with your thoughts. This could be a cosy corner in your home, a favourite park bench, or even a quiet café. Find a space and time when you won’t be interrupted and you can immerse yourself in this exercise. Depending on your personal style, expect this exercise to take around 1-1.5 hours. It should be a pleasurable experience so give yourself the gift of this time.
Step 2 : Review Your Year
I’m a huge fan of keeping an annual journal that I do this exercise in each year. However, any notebook will do so don’t let the need for something other than pen and paper stop you from getting started.
Start by considering your year, month by month. Write down significant events, milestones, achievements, challenges, and any other noteworthy experiences that come to mind. This exercise will help you gain perspective on how the year unfolded and provide insights into what areas of your life were most impactful. Make sure you take a moment to enjoy the reflection and then focus on these key questions:
- What makes this year unforgettable? Don’t let the day-to-day grind rob you of the memories and lessons that each year brings and your unique experiences. Take a moment to think about what made this year stand out.
- What did I enjoy doing this year? Life is short, and it’s important to make time for things that bring us joy. Think back on the activities that made you happiest this year.
Step 3 : Celebrate Accomplishments
Next, focus on celebrating your accomplishments. Take a moment to acknowledge all the things you achieved throughout the year – big or small. These could be personal or professional accomplishments such as completing a project at work, learning a new skill, improving relationships, or taking steps towards personal growth. You should have started thinking about this in Step 2. Now answer these key questions:
- What is my most significant achievement this year? No matter how small, every accomplishment deserves recognition. Celebrate what you’ve achieved this year.
- How did this achievement make me feel? Consider both your emotions and how that emotion feels in your body – where do you feel it in your body? What is the sensation?
Step 4 : Take your Lessons from the Year
Reflecting on lessons is just as important as celebrating accomplishments. Consider the obstacles you faced during the year and how you overcame them. Now think about your wins and learning activities that contributed to your growth and capture those lessons too.
- What did I learn about myself from my challenges and successes this year and how did they contribute to my growth? Write down any lessons learned from these experiences and how they have shaped you into a stronger and more resilient individual.
- What did you read/watch/listen to that made the most impact this year? The media we consume can shape our thoughts and perspectives. Consider what books, movies, or podcasts had a lasting impact on you this year.
- What’s one thing that changed about yourself? Growth is an ongoing process, and it’s important to recognize when we’ve evolved. Think about how you’ve changed as a person this year.
Step 5 : Identify Patterns and Themes
As you review your year, look for patterns and themes that emerge. Are there recurring situations or emotions that stood out to you? Do you notice any areas of your life that require more attention or improvement? Identifying these patterns can help you gain clarity on what aspects of your life need nurturing and where you can focus your energy in the coming year. Write down your answer to these questions:
- What did you worry about most and how did it turn out? It’s natural to worry about things we can’t control, but often those worries are unfounded. Reflect on what you worried about this year and whether those fears came true.
- What was your biggest regret and why? We all make mistakes, but it’s important to learn from them. Identify a regret from this year and consider what you could have done differently.
- What surprised you the most this year? Life is full of surprises, both good and bad. Consider what unexpected events or experiences came your way this year.
- If you could go back to last January 1, what suggestions would you give your past self? Hindsight is 20/20, but we can still learn from our mistakes. Consider what advice you would give yourself if you could go back in time.
Step 6 : Express Gratitude
Gratitude is a powerful practice that can shift our perspective and bring more joy into our lives. Take a moment to express gratitude for the people, experiences, and opportunities that have enriched your life during the past year. Consider all of the things you are grateful for, big or small. This exercise will help cultivate a positive mindset as you transition into the new year.
- What/who is the one thing/person you’re grateful for? Practicing gratitude has been shown to improve mental health and overall well-being. Take a moment to appreciate someone or something that made your life better this year.
Step 7 : Set Intentions for the Future
Now that you have reflected on the past year, it’s time to set intentions for the future. Think about what you want to achieve, experience, or cultivate in the coming year. These intentions can be related to various areas of your life such as career, relationships, health, personal growth, or creativity. Write down your intentions in a positive and specific manner, making them feel attainable and inspiring. You can use the following prompts to help clarify your thinking:
- This year I’m going to……………………………..<action> by ……………………….<date> because ……………………… <motivation>
- By the end of 2024 I will have ……………………………. <accomplishment> because ……………………………… <motivation>
Step 8 : Create an Action Plan
Setting intentions is just the first step; creating an action plan is what brings them to life. Break down each intention into smaller actionable steps that will help you move closer to your goals. Consider what resources or support you may need along the way and how you can hold yourself accountable. Having a clear plan will increase your chances of success and keep you motivated throughout the year.

Step 9 : Practice Self-Compassion
As you embark on a new year filled with possibilities, remember to practice self-compassion. Be kind to yourself when setbacks occur or when progress feels slow. Treat yourself with the same love and understanding you would offer to a dear friend. Remember that growth takes time, and every step forward is a step in the right direction.
Step 10 : Embrace Change and Adaptability
Lastly, embrace change and cultivate adaptability as you move into the new year. Life is unpredictable, and circumstances may shift unexpectedly. By embracing change and being adaptable, you can navigate challenges with grace and resilience. Stay open to new opportunities, be willing to learn from unexpected experiences, and trust in your ability to adapt and thrive.
This reflection exercise provides a valuable opportunity to end one year and start another with purpose and intention. By taking the time to end one year intentionally and plan for the year ahead, you can set yourself up for a fulfilling and transformative year ahead. Take the time to engage in this reflection exercise and watch as it brings clarity, growth, and joy into your life.
