Burnout Isn’t Personal. It’s Structural.

And women are done performing alignment in a system that doesn’t see them

We need to stop asking women how they’re coping with burnout—and start asking why the system keeps burning them out.

Because when 77% of women in 2025 report experiencing burnout, it’s not a you problem.
It’s a leadership model problem.
And it’s working exactly as it was built to—by and for men, over 200 years ago.

So let’s be clear:
Women are not broken.
Ambition is not the enemy. Nor are men.
And resilience is not the cure.

This is a problem for men and women to solve together and it starts with women owning their ambition, embracing their femininity and stepping into their power to transform the system from the inside.

The Data Is Loud—But the Story Behind It Is Louder

📉 According to Women’s Agenda‘s 2025 findings:

77% of women say they’ve experienced burnout

64% report it’s affecting their physical health

57% are questioning their long-term career goals

And loneliness among women leaders is rising rapidly

Women are tired—not just physically, but existentially.
They’re tired of being told to “speak up more” then being told they’re too assertive.
Tired of being praised for leadership traits—until those traits don’t fit the room.
Tired of having to be strategic and supportive. Empathetic and efficient.
Feminine—but not too feminine.

They are tired because they’re not just doing the job—they’re contorting themselves to lead in a way that doesn’t feel true. And that’s tied to their boss. Their boss who’s reinforcing outdated leadership norms at the expense of humans. That’s the real cost. That’s where burnout starts.

Burnout Isn’t Just the Outcome of Overwork

Yes, women are still doing more unpaid work—at home and at work.
Yes, they’re still expected to be the note-taker, the birthday organiser, the emotional translator in the room.

But the bigger issue is misalignment.
The internal grind of pretending something fits when it doesn’t.

Burnout doesn’t only come from too much work.
It comes from too much betrayal of self—too many moments where you act against what you believe, who you are, or what you stand for to stay safe, liked, or promotable.

The system isn’t just exhausting.
It’s emotionally disorienting.
And that’s a far heavier load than most people see.

The Loneliness No One Talks About

The further women rise in leadership, the more invisible this experience becomes. I was talking to an ex-colleague recently and we spoke the unspeakable – the fact that women are safe until senior management and then all bets were off. The discrimination, micro-aggressions, harassment and side-lining was real…and unspoken so we all thought we were alone. And that’s not isolated to that one company, it is common across many.
Women are praised for their success but discouraged from naming their discomfort.

So they suffer quietly.
They internalise the misfit.
They assume they’re the only one.
They question their ambition.
They consider walking away—not because they can’t lead, but because they’re tired of leading someone else’s way.

And that is the cost we should be talking about.

What We Need Now

What we need is not more bubble baths and breathing exercises (though I am a fan of meditation and self-care, it’s not the cure here).
What we need is a fundamental redefinition of leadership—one that doesn’t ask women to amputate parts of themselves to belong.

What we need is power with—not power over.
We need women who are ready to lead as themselves—not smaller, shinier versions of someone else’s model.

This isn’t about dropping out.
It’s about opting in—with clarity, energy and alignment.

So What Can You Actually Do?

Here’s where I start with my clients:

🤍 Get clear on what leadership looks like for you
Not the model you inherited—the one you would design if you trusted yourself fully by living your purpose, values and vision for the future.

💥 Identify what’s making you tired—and what’s making you feel fake
Burnout and misalignment often come wrapped together. And often at their heart are what I call the “Confidence Crusher” – your inner critic. Sitting in judgement over you, others and every situation. Taking control of this and knowing how to manage, own and take power from your inner critic is where relief often lies.

👀 Redefine feedback
Take the subjectivity out of the feedback and get feedback that’s objectively aligned to leadership effectiveness. Learn how to overcome what’s holding you back from making your strengths your super powers in a way that makes you whole.

📣 Live your Leadership truth
You are not the only one trying to hold your ambition and your identity in the same hand. So speak your ambition out loud, make being you part of your leadership. And if you find yourself in an environment that doesn’t support that, maybe it’s time to raise the flag and call out the need for change. It’s amazing what a strong, values based conversation can do.

Let’s Not Quietly Quit—Let’s Strategically Reclaim

We are not here to fit in—we’re here to shape what comes next.

Burnout is not a personal failing. It’s the byproduct of a model that was never built for us, now straining under the weight of women’s brilliance.

We don’t need to be more resilient. We need to be more real—with ourselves, with each other, and with the systems we’ve been asked to succeed in.

If we want a different outcome, we have to lead differently.
With more honesty. More courage. More conviction.

This isn’t about fixing women. This is about freeing women from outdated leadership norms to lead fully, powerfully, and unapologetically.

Because the revolution isn’t loud. It’s consistent.
It’s every woman who chooses alignment over approval.
It’s every moment a woman says no to the role she’s expected to play and yes to the one she’s here to claim.

That’s what changes the system.
That’s what writes the next chapter of leadership.
And it starts with you.

Because the system isn’t broken.
It’s just outdated.
And we’re rewriting it—one woman at a time.
