The Magic of Perspective Taking

A Better Way to Lead

I had a conversation with a friend recently—one of those deep, real chats where you peel back the layers of what’s really going on. She’s an executive, smashing it in her role, and feeling the grind. She sighed and said, “I just don’t get it. I keep telling my team what needs to happen, but it feels like I’m talking to a brick wall.”

Ah, the old “Why won’t they just get it?” frustration. I’ve been there, you’ve been there—we’ve all been there. And honestly, the fix isn’t to keep pushing your point harder. It’s to step back, take a breath, and ask yourself: What’s going on for them?

That’s the essence of perspective taking. It’s not about agreeing or letting go of your ideas; it’s about expanding your lens. You stop obsessing over “What’s in it for me?” (WIIFM, for those of us who love an acronym) and genuinely step into someone else’s world.

And let me tell you, it’s a game changer.

Why Does Perspective Taking Matter?

Perspective taking matters because it’s the bridge between understanding and action. Without it, we risk making decisions in a vacuum—decisions that might feel right to us but alienate, confuse, or frustrate those we lead, influence, or serve.

Think about this: When was the last time you felt misunderstood? Maybe it was during a disagreement at work, or when your boss overlooked a great idea you shared. Now imagine if they had paused to really understand your perspective. How different would that interaction have been?

As leaders, we’re in the business of connection—connecting with our teams, clients, peers, and even our critics. Perspective taking is the secret sauce that makes those connections meaningful. It helps us build trust, navigate conflict, and create solutions that actually work for everyone involved.

Why It’s a Leadership Superpower

When you take the time to understand another person’s perspective, you unlock insights that can transform your leadership. Here’s why:

1.      You Make Better Decisions

Decisions made in isolation often miss critical nuances. By stepping into someone else’s shoes, you can anticipate potential roadblocks, uncover hidden opportunities, and ensure your choices resonate with the people they impact.

2.    You Build Stronger Teams

When people feel seen and understood, they’re more likely to trust you and stay engaged. Perspective taking shows your team that you value their input and experiences, creating a culture of collaboration and mutual respect.

3.    You Navigate Conflict with Grace

Conflict is inevitable, but it doesn’t have to be destructive. By understanding the other person’s viewpoint, you can address the root cause of the issue rather than just the symptoms. This leads to resolutions that stick and relationships that thrive.

The Practical Magic of Perspective Taking

So, how do you do it? How do you move beyond your own perspective to see the world through someone else’s eyes?

Here’s a roadmap:

1.  Expand Your Lens in Negotiations

Negotiations can feel like a tug-of-war—both sides pulling hard to get what they want. But what if you stopped pulling for a moment and asked, “What does the other person really need?”

Let’s say you’re negotiating a budget increase for your team. Your instinct might be to focus on your team’s needs, but pause and consider:

      • What pressures is the finance team facing?
      • What does the decision-maker value most—efficiency, ROI, innovation?
  •

By framing your request in terms of their priorities, you’re not just asking for something—you’re solving a problem for them. That’s the kind of collaboration that turns negotiations into win-win scenarios.

2.  Reframe Frustration into Curiosity

It’s easy to feel frustrated when someone doesn’t meet your expectations. Maybe a team member dropped the ball on a project, or a colleague keeps challenging your ideas in meetings.

Instead of stewing in annoyance, try this:

          • Ask yourself, “What might be going on for them? Are they overwhelmed? Do they lack clarity on expectations?”
          • Consider, “What can I do to help them succeed?”

This isn’t about excusing poor performance—it’s about understanding the root cause so you can address it effectively. And bonus: shifting from frustration to curiosity is WAY better for your mental health.

3.  Use Perspective Taking to Plan Change

Change is hard—for everyone. Even when the end goal is positive, the process can feel daunting. Perspective taking helps you anticipate and address resistance before it derails your plans.

Let’s say you’re rolling out a new initiative. Instead of focusing solely on the benefits, ask:

          • “How will this impact my team’s daily routines?
          • What concerns might they have?
          • What support will they need to adapt successfully?”

By considering these questions, you can tailor your communication and support strategies to meet people where they are.

4.  Deepen Empathy and Connection

Perspective taking isn’t just a leadership tool—it’s a human one. It allows you to step into someone else’s experience and see the world through their eyes. Empathy doesn’t require you to consider the other persons reason, simply that their emotion is right for them and that you understand that emotion. Perspective taking moves beyond understanding their emotion to understanding their why. A watch point though, be careful when combining empathy and perspective taking that you don’t fall into judgement on whether the other person is right or wrong in their thinking and emotion. To deepen empathy you want to stay out of judgement and simply understand.

Think about a time when you felt truly understood. That feeling of connection is what perspective taking can create for others. It’s a powerful way to deepen empathy, build relationships, and foster a sense of belonging.

5.  Defuse Conflict and Reclaim Your Power

We’ve all been there—caught in a dispute that leaves us angry, hurt, or both. Perspective taking can help you navigate these moments with grace.

Next time you’re in conflict, try this:

          • Ask the other person for their perspective. “What led you to this decision? or What were you hoping to achieve?”
          • Listen without interrupting or defending.
          • Reflect back what you heard to ensure you understand.

This doesn’t mean you have to agree, but understanding their viewpoint can take the sting out of the conflict and open the door to resolution.

Why Perspective Taking Matters Now More Than Ever

We’re living in a time of rapid change, high expectations, and constant pressure to deliver. It’s easy to get tunnel vision—to focus so much on our own goals and challenges that we forget to look up and see the bigger picture.

Perspective taking reminds us to pause, step back, and consider the world beyond our own. It’s a powerful antidote to the stress, isolation, and misunderstandings that can derail even the best leaders.

Challenge Yourself to Try This Today

Perspective taking isn’t something you master overnight—it’s a practice. But like any skill, the more you use it, the better you get.

Start small:

            1. In your next conversation, pause and ask yourself, “What might this person be experiencing right now?”
            2. Frame your response with their perspective in mind.
            3. Notice the difference it makes.

Final Thoughts: The Joy of Expanding Your World

At its core, perspective taking is about connection—connecting with others, expanding your own thinking, and creating solutions that work for everyone involved. It’s about moving beyond What’s in it for me? to ask, What’s in it for us?

And here’s the thing: when you take the time to understand others, you’re not just helping them—you’re helping yourself. You’re becoming a more empathetic, effective, and impactful leader.

So, let’s make this our mantra for the week: Pause. Breathe. Step into their shoes. You might be surprised by what you discover.
